About Us
We want to fuel your interest in aviation, especially WWI military aviation!
In 2010, I began a journey to experience WWI aviation first hand. In the whole world, there are only a few places where you can get your hands on, dirty in fact, a museum quality WWI airplane. I wanted to experience that so badly! To have the wind in my hair, the castor oil wafting to my nose, the pure, unadulterated joy of looking at the world from the cockpit of a WWI fighter…ah, such dreams!
I set out to finagle my way into the pilot’s seat of the legendary Fokker Dr.I, made famous by the Red Baron. To my naïve surprise, no one would let me fly their Fokker! I offered good money, insurance coverage, you name it! All to no avail. Seems people are pretty tight with their planes, right? Considering each one is hand built over a course of years before being born of a labor of love, I am no longer surprised that I was turned down, despite my enthusiasm.
I soon learned that the only way I was ever going to find myself at the controls of the Dreidecker was if I built it or bought it. Lo and behold! I bought a very nice one in 2013, and began the journey of turning a wonderfully built Fokker into a very fine example of the Dr.I.
I’ve always wanted to share the experience with others, through writing and through videos and pictures. I finally reached a point where I envisioned a WWI version of the Commemorative Air Force, so it is my ultimate goal to create such an organization where people can get deeply involved with WWI aviation at every level. From building airplanes, to restoring engines, to living history representations, and yes! even to flying them.
It is my sincere hope that your viewing of this site will encourage you to get involved. Broadly, in order to have a WWI aero club, we need physical support in the shop, material support to build, maintain, and display WWI equipment, and we need financial support. Please reach out, so we can talk about how to get you actively engaged in one of the most amazing aviation experiences you will ever have!
